Focus on Japan: Supplemental Materials
Highly-Cited Research. The Global Research Report dedicates a full section to Japan’s highly-cited research, finding that in terms of relative citation impact, Japan scores 2% below the world and 20% below Italy (ranked sixth among G7 nations) for 2005-2009. One contributing factor, the report notes, is that Japan produces relatively fewer highly-cited papers compared with other G7 nations. However, the broad report findings cannot capture the full picture, and there are of course many influential papers from Japan that Thomson Reuters has been tracking over the years. ScienceWatch.com has interviewed several Japanese authors whose work was highlighted by Essential Science Indicators in 2010 as Fast-Breaking Papers, New Hot Papers, or Emerging Research Fronts.
